Prominent Wild Species

Spread over an area of 777 sq. km. in the cardamom hills region of the Western Ghats, Periyar or Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary is a home to about 62 species of mammals, 320 species of birds and 45 different species of reptiles. Apart from 40 tigers (approximately) and over 1000 elephants, the area is famous for gaur, sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, doles or Indian wild dog, nilgiri tahr, mongoose, leopard etc.

Reptile lovers often visit this place in the charm of various lizards, python and king cobra. Apart from that, bird species like cormorants, darters, kingfishers, Malabar hornbill, racket-tailed drongos etc. are popular among ornithologists or bird lovers.

Popular Activities

Covered with evergreen and semi-evergreen rain forests, the entire forest area is famous for its adventurous safaris. You can choose from boat safari along the Periyar Lake, jeep safari or elephant safari to explore the park/sanctuary. Although it is a Tiger Reserve, but tourists flock here to see the Indian elephants playing alongside the Periyar Lake.
